Independence Day: Recalling Ambedkar's Warnings and Remedies for India
A very wise man named Dr. B.R. Ambedkar helped write the rules, called the Constitution, for the country of India.
A long time ago, in 1949, he gave a warning about the future.
He said that in politics everyone would have equal voting rights, but in real life people would not be treated equally.
He believed this was a big problem, like wearing one shoe that fits and one that does not.
He said the caste system, which puts people into different groups, stops society from feeling like one big family.
He also worried that some regions of India with more people could push around regions with fewer people.
So he suggested that every state should have an equal say in one part of the government, and that very big states should be split into smaller ones.
He also compared India's leaders to leaders in France and Japan, who gave up their special powers for their countries.
Today, people remember these warnings on Independence Day to think about fairness and unity.
In November 1949, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar warned that from 26 January 1950 India would enter a 'life of contradictions': political equality alongside social and economic inequality.
Ambedkar argued that democracy's roots lie in social relationships and described the caste system as a 'standing denial' of the ideals of society and democracy.
He proposed equal representation for every state in the Rajya Sabha and equal voting power on Money Bills, fearing that northern states would override southern interests.
Ambedkar recommended dividing Madhya Pradesh and Bihar into two states each and Uttar Pradesh into three units; in 2011, Mayawati proposed four parts, but the UPA government did not support the demand.
In 'What Congress and Gandhi have done to the Untouchables,' he contrasted France and Japan, whose governing classes surrendered privileges, with India's, which he said used nationalism to maintain its privileges.

UGC anti-discrimination guidelines
Ambedkar's remedies and supporters of safeguards
The guidelines correct historical wrongs of discrimination, backed by evidence of institutional atrocities against students from reserved castes in universities.
Defenders of existing arrangements and dominant social groups
Dominant social groups resisted the guidelines, an episode seen as public morality clashing with Ambedkar's idea of constitutional morality.
Representation in Parliament
Ambedkar's remedies and supporters of safeguards
Every state should have equal representation in the Rajya Sabha with equal voting power on Money Bills, as in the US Senate, to protect southern states from being overridden by the north.
Defenders of existing arrangements and dominant social groups
The Constitution as it stands gives unequal, population-based representation in the Rajya Sabha and gives the Upper Chamber no powers on finance.
Division of large northern states
Ambedkar's remedies and supporters of safeguards
Dividing Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh into smaller states would address the North versus South imbalance Ambedkar warned about.
Defenders of existing arrangements and dominant social groups
