Over 13,000 Schools Selected Under PM SHRI Scheme, Centre Says
The government of India has a special plan called PM SHRI to make some government schools much better.
PM SHRI stands for Pradhan Mantri Schools for Rising India.
These schools are meant to be examples, or models, for other schools to learn from.
The government told the Rajya Sabha, one part of India's parliament, that 13,092 schools have been chosen for this plan.
That is more than thirteen thousand schools across the whole country.
The choices include regular state schools and special schools run by the central government.
Uttar Pradesh has the most chosen schools, with 1,888.
The plan was approved in 2022, and the money for it started being used in 2023-24.
The goal is to give these schools good buildings, new teaching ideas, computers, and clean green habits.
The Central government told the Rajya Sabha that 13,092 schools have been selected under the PM SHRI scheme across states, Union Territories and central school systems.
Minister of State for Education Jayant Chaudhary shared the state-wise data and fund details in a written reply on Wednesday.
The PM SHRI scheme was approved by the Union Cabinet in 2022, with fund allocation, release and utilisation beginning in the 2023-24 financial year.
Uttar Pradesh leads with 1,888 PM SHRI schools, followed by Andhra Pradesh (982), Maharashtra (946), Madhya Pradesh (944) and Bihar (904).
Launched on September 7, 2022, the scheme aims to upgrade more than 14,500 existing government schools into model institutions implementing NEP 2020.
