Collector orders crackdown on illegal sex determination tests
The district leader, called the Collector, said clinics are not allowed to find out if a baby is a boy or a girl before it is born.
That is against the law because it can be unfair to girls.
So he told health officers to check hospitals and scanning centres carefully.
Anyone who breaks the rule could get in trouble and even lose their licence.
He also wants to make sure there are enough girls being born in the area.
Some places have fewer girls than boys, and he wants to know why.
He asked a team of experts to study those places and write a report.
Many clinics asked for permission to open or renew their licences.
The ones that followed the rules got permission, but three were told to wait because they did not have enough staff or proper records.
All of this is to help keep the number of boys and girls balanced.
District Collector Dr S Venkateswar ordered strict enforcement of the PCPNDT Act to prevent illegal sex determination tests.
Criminal cases will be registered against hospitals and scan centres violating the law, with licence cancellations where necessary.
Officials were directed to identify unregistered hospitals and scan centres and conduct special inspections.
An expert committee will study reasons for the low sex ratio in Chittamuru, KVB Puram, Pellakuru, Sullurpeta and Puttur mandals.
Permissions for three ART centres were deferred over deficiencies in staffing and record maintenance.
