Mumbai: Chincholi Bunder Road widening delay raises safety concerns
There is a busy road in Mumbai called Chincholi Bunder Road.
The city wanted to make the road wider and fix a sharp curve so it would be safer for everyone.
But the work has not happened for many years, even though city officials approved it long ago.
Meanwhile, some shops and buildings have added extra parts without permission.
Some of them have also placed tables and counters on the footpath.
This blocks the path where people are supposed to walk.
Now people have to walk on the road where cars and other vehicles are driving, which can be dangerous.
A local social activist named Manoj Jayanath Yadav asked the city office to start the widening work and remove the blockages.
He also asked officials to check whether some restaurants and shops have the proper licences to operate safely.
The long-pending widening and curvature improvement of Chincholi Bunder Road in Malad (West) has raised fresh safety concerns among residents.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has approved an 18.30-metre Regular Line road and a 36.60-metre realigned Development Plan road, but the project has remained pending for several years.
Unauthorised constructions, extensions, lofts and encroachments on public footpaths have reduced effective road space and forced pedestrians onto the carriageway.
Social activist Manoj Jayanath Yadav filed a complaint with the Assistant Municipal Commissioner of the BMC's P/North Ward, seeking immediate project implementation and removal of encroachments.
Yadav also alleged that some hotels, restaurants and commercial establishments may be operating without mandatory civic licences, raising hygiene and food safety concerns.
