Farmers Urged to Diversify Crops Amid El Niño Conditions
El Niño is a weather pattern that can bring dry conditions and make it harder for farmers to grow crops.
Manazir Jeelani Samoon is an agriculture commissioner, a person whose job is to help farmers.
He visited Singavaram village to talk with farmers about protecting their crops.
He told farmers that growing different kinds of crops can be a good idea.
Some crops, like green gram, black gram, and millets, need less water than others.
Growing these crops can help when there is not enough water.
He also checked a system that gives farmers fertiliser, which helps plants grow strong.
The farmers told him that a fertiliser called potash costs too much.
He asked other officials to look into the price and find a solution.
Agriculture commissioner Manazir Jeelani Samoon urged farmers to adopt crop diversification and climate-resilient farming practices amid El Niño conditions.
He spoke during the Raithanna–Meekosam (RMK) El Niño Effect Mitigation Campaign at Singavaram village in Denkada mandal on Friday.
Farmers in water-scarce areas were advised to grow pulses such as green gram and black gram, as well as millets, instead of water-intensive crops.
Samoon reviewed the implementation of the APAIMS fertiliser distribution system and sought feedback from farmers.
Farmers raised concerns over the high price of potash fertilisers, prompting the commissioner to direct officials to examine the issue.
