Jaishankar meets Liberia parliament delegation, reaffirms deeper Global South partnership
Two countries far apart, India and Liberia, are learning from each other.
A group of 15 lawmakers from Liberia traveled all the way to India.
They came to see how India runs programs that help its people, like opening bank accounts and providing clean water.
The trip was paid for by three countries working together: India, Brazil, and South Africa.
This kind of helping is called a peer-learning program, where countries teach each other.
The visit also focuses on women, to help more women become leaders in Liberia.
The group includes people from Liberia's two houses of government and its support staff.
India's foreign minister, S Jaishankar, met with them and talked about how countries can work together.
He said India wants to be a good partner to countries in the Global South.
This means developing countries helping each other grow stronger.
India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met a 15-member parliamentary delegation from Liberia visiting India under an IBSA-funded peer-learning programme.
The delegation includes lawmakers from Liberia's Senate, House of Representatives and Secretariat, accompanied by staff from UN Women.
Discussions covered India's welfare schemes including Jan-Dhan Yojana, MUDRA Yojana, Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana, Jal Jeevan Mission and Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Yojana.
The visit supports a project on women legislators promoting voice, leadership and gender-responsive governance, implemented by UN Women Liberia with the Women's Legislative Caucus of Liberia.
Jaishankar reaffirmed India's commitment to a deeper Global South partnership during the nearly week-long visit that began on August 10.
The programme is funded by India, Brazil and South Africa through the IBSA Fund and administered by the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC).
