Japan Marks 81 Years of Hiroshima Day With Peace Ceremony

On Thursday, August 6, 2026, people in Japan remembered one of the saddest days in history.

It is called Hiroshima Day, and it marked 81 years since a terrible bomb was dropped on the city of Hiroshima.

That bomb, nicknamed "Little Boy," was the first atomic bomb ever used in war.

It was dropped by the United States in 1945 during World War II.

Thousands of people died right away, and many others became sick or hurt later from the bomb's heat, blast, and radiation.

People who lived through it are called Hibakusha.

To remember them, about 50,000 people gathered at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park.

Japan's Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and Hiroshima's Mayor Kazumi Matsui spoke at the ceremony.

At exactly 8:15 in the morning, everyone stayed quiet for one minute to honor those who died.

People at the ceremony also hoped for a world without nuclear weapons.
