India and Japan Launch Three-Year Treated Wastewater Reuse Project
India and Japan are starting a three-year project to help reuse treated wastewater.
The Japan International Cooperation Agency and India’s CPHEEO signed an agreement to begin the work.
The project will help government organizations build skills and improve plans for reusing water safely.
It will create a guide explaining how treated wastewater can be used.
The guide will cover uses such as farming, industry, and public spaces.
The project will also train city authorities and share useful examples and technologies.
India encourages states to use recycled water for some urban and industrial water needs.
The effort is intended to help India manage water resources and support water-secure cities.
JICA and CPHEEO signed a Record of Discussions for a three-year technical cooperation project.
The project aims to strengthen institutional frameworks and technical capacity for safe, sustainable treated wastewater reuse across India.
Planned work includes a national reuse manual, training for local bodies, best-practice sharing, and policy recommendations.
The manual will address industrial, agricultural, civic, and ecological reuse, as well as groundwater recharge and aquifer storage and recovery.
Under AMRUT initiatives, states are encouraged to meet 20% of urban water demand and 40% of industrial water demand with recycled water.

Quotes
TAKEUCHI Takuro
Chief Representative of the JICA India Office
“Water security is becoming one of the most critical challenges facing rapidly growing cities around the world. The circular use of treated wastewater offers significant opportunities to conserve freshwater resources, improve climate resilience, and support sustainable urban development. JICA is pleased to partner with CPHEEO and MoHUA in advancing this important initiative and hopes that the project will contribute to strengthening national capacity and accelerating wastewater reuse across India”
