RBI Revises Bulk FD Rules, Bringing Daily Rate Disclosure
The Reserve Bank of India is changing the rules for very large fixed deposits.
These deposits are called bulk deposits and start at ₹3 crore.
From October 1, banks must publish their bulk-deposit rates by 10 am on working days.
They can correct or update the rates until 10:10 am.
Banks must use the rates shown on their websites when calculating interest.
Similar large deposits made on the same day should receive the same rate at different branches.
However, banks can offer different rates when deposits have different liquidity effects under the LCR rules.
The changes apply to several types of banks, including commercial, cooperative, regional rural and payment banks.
From October 1, banks must disclose applicable bulk-deposit rates by 10 am on every working day, with a 10-minute grace period.
Banks must use the interest rates published on their websites when paying interest on deposits, including bulk fixed deposits.
A bulk deposit is defined as a single-rupee term deposit of ₹3 crore or more.
For similar bulk deposits accepted on the same day, banks must offer the same applicable rate across branches.
Banks may still vary rates based on deposit liquidity treatment under the Liquidity Coverage Ratio framework, including for certain NRI rupee deposits.
