Perungulam Wetland Moves Toward Ramsar Recognition in Tamil Nadu
Perungulam is a large wetland in Tamil Nadu where many birds live and visit.
It also provides water for farming and supports many kinds of fish.
A study found 147 bird species there during one year.
Some of these birds travel long distances and stop at Perungulam for food and rest.
Several species are threatened or specially protected by law.
Officials want the wetland to receive Ramsar recognition, which highlights important wetlands.

The 860-acre wetland is fed by the Thamirabarani River and supports irrigation, fish and birds.
A 2023–2024 study recorded 147 bird species, including 100 resident species.
The wetland hosts threatened birds, including the endangered Egyptian Vulture and vulnerable Curlew Sandpiper.
Officials are also considering a Blue-Green Centre tag and a conservation plan for the site.
