Chengalpet to Get Second Bird Sanctuary at Odhiyur Lagoon

Every winter, many birds fly very long distances to find food and a safe place to rest.

In Chengalpet, a district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, there is a famous lake called Vedanthangal where huge numbers of birds gather.

Now the government wants to create a second safe place for birds near the sea, at a lagoon called Odhiyur.

First, workers from the revenue department must measure the land.

Then the forest department will take care of the area and turn it into a bird sanctuary.

Rules will protect the wetland so nobody can build houses, farms, or other structures there.

Many birds travel over Odhiyur when they fly between India and Australia.

Experts say about 200 different kinds of birds stop there to rest and eat.

When the sanctuary is ready with enough trees, birds can build nests and raise their babies in winter.

The new sanctuary will help protect the birds and the place where they stop to rest.
