NIT Rourkela Chip Highlights Odisha’s Role in India’s Semiconductor Push
NIT Rourkela has made a small computer chip that helps protect data.
The chip is designed for devices such as Internet of Things equipment and embedded systems.
It can encrypt information and check that the information has not been changed.
The chip was shown at SEMICON India 2026 in New Delhi.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi saw it during a presentation featuring work from 20 Indian institutions.
Students and professors at NIT Rourkela developed the chip through a government programme.
It was later manufactured at Semiconductor Complex Limited in Mohali.
The institute hopes this work will help train more semiconductor experts and create more Indian-designed chips.
