AIADMK Slams Karnataka On Cauvery, Urges CM Vijay All-Party Meet
A river called the Cauvery flows through two places in India: Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
Both places need its water, so they sometimes argue about how to share it.
A politician from Tamil Nadu, Mr. Udhayakumar, says Karnataka is not being fair.
He says Karnataka sends water to Tamil Nadu only when its own dams are too full.
He says that is like treating Tamil Nadu as a drain.
Mr. Udhayakumar wants the new leader of Tamil Nadu, Mr. Vijay, to call a big meeting with all the political parties.
He wants everyone in Tamil Nadu to agree together about the river.
He says the Cauvery gives drinking water to more than five crore people in Tamil Nadu.
The river also helps water about 21 lakh acres of farms.
Mr. Udhayakumar hopes a united Tamil Nadu can get its fair share of water.
Senior AIADMK leader R B Udhayakumar accused Karnataka of a "hegemonic attitude" over the Cauvery dispute, saying it treats Tamil Nadu as a drain for its surplus water.
He urged Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay to immediately convene an all-party meeting to present a united front on the state's riparian rights.
Udhayakumar alleged Karnataka ignored directives from the Supreme Court, CWMA, the CWRC, and the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal, including failing to release 3,500 cusecs daily for 15 days in July.
He said Karnataka abruptly released approximately 18,000 cusecs of surplus water after heavy rains solely to protect its own overflowing reservoirs.
Udhayakumar claimed Karnataka built four dams in violation of historical agreements, is pushing the Mekedatu dam, and noted the Cauvery sustains about 21 lakh acres of farmland and 5.5 crore people for drinking water.
