5.5-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Leh, Ladakh; No Casualties Reported

Earth is made of giant pieces called tectonic plates that sometimes bump and slide against each other.

When that happens, the ground shakes, and we call that an earthquake.

On Thursday morning, an earthquake happened in a place called Ladakh, which is high up in the mountains.

The earthquake was fairly strong and measured 5.5 on a special scale.

It happened at 6:05 in the morning, while many people were still sleeping.

Scientists from the National Centre for Seismology figured out that it began 10 kilometers under the ground.

Because it started so close to the surface, people felt the shaking very strongly.

Even though the shaking was strong, no one was hurt and no buildings were reported damaged.

Scientists are keeping a close watch to see if more shaking happens.
