Kolkata Metro Purple Line completes Khidderpore-Victoria tunnel breakthrough
Kolkata Metro Purple Line gets tunnel breakthrough between Khidderpore and Victoria · indianexpress.com

People in Kolkata are getting a new subway train called the Purple Line.

Building a subway means digging big tunnels underground.

The digging is done by giant machines called Tunnel Boring Machines, or TBMs for short.

One of these machines has a name: Divya.

Divya just finished digging a tunnel between two places called Khidderpore and Victoria.

The tunnel is about 1.72 kilometres long, which is quite far underground.

Another machine named Durga finished digging the other tunnel on July 10.

Now both tunnels between the two stations are complete, so the Purple Line is one step closer to opening.

These tunnel machines are special because they are built for Kolkata's soft, wet ground.

When the Purple Line is ready, people will be able to travel across the city much faster.
