Government Medical Institutions to Observe Silence for RG Kar Victim
A doctor who worked at a big hospital in Kolkata, India, was badly hurt and died at the hospital two years ago.
Many people across the country were very sad and angry, and they held protests asking for justice.
Now, the leader of the state, Suvendu Adhikari, said that on Sunday morning at 11 o'clock, all government hospitals and health centres will be completely quiet for two minutes.
Before that, people will light a lamp to remember the doctor.
This is the first time the state government has held an official event to remember her.
One man named Sanjay Roy was caught and sent to prison for life for the crime.
The police agency called the CBI is now looking into the case again with a new team.
The doctor's mother is now a lawmaker, and a special event in her memory will be held in Panihati on Sunday.
Her family and the state leader will attend that event.
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced that two minutes of silence will be observed at 11 a.m. on Sunday in all government health centres and institutions in Bengal for the RG Kar rape-murder victim.
A lamp will be lit before the silence, marking the first government initiative to remember the victim; no such programme was held during the Trinamool Congress era.
A female doctor was raped and murdered in the emergency department of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9, 2024, triggering protests across the country.
Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer of Kolkata Police, is the only person arrested so far; he was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment, and the CBI has restarted the investigation with a new investigating officer.
A memorial programme under the trust formed in the victim's name will be held at Lok Sanskriti Bhavan in Panihati on Sunday, attended by the victim's family and Chief Minister Adhikari; the victim's mother is now a BJP MLA from Panihati.
