Goa police seek courier help to curb postal drug smuggling
You’ve got mail: Goa police say drugs are entering the state via post · indianexpress.com

Some people who sell drugs in Goa, a state in India, now hide them inside packages sent through the post or courier services.

The police found hashish hidden inside an iron in one package.

Goa Police are now working with courier and postal companies to catch the smugglers.

They told delivery companies to watch for packages with fake names or missing details.

Some smugglers use a 'dead-drop' method, where buyers get a location and an unsuspecting delivery person brings the package.

Many drugs come to Goa from other parts of India, while some, like cocaine, come from other countries.

The police asked delivery workers to report suspicious parcels through the MANAS helpline.

The number of drug cases and arrests in Goa has grown each year.

This is part of a three-year plan called Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan.

Senior Police Official

“"We have created a WhatsApp group for coordination with the courier service operators and some delivery partners. If they spot any suspicious parcel, especially near schools and clubs in the coastal belt, we have asked them to report to the police. The idea is also to identify new patterns and get to the original source. One challenge that we face is that there is no regulatory framework overseeing private courier services,"”

“"Courier and postal service providers are key stakeholders to prevent the misuse of their services by drug traffickers. We flagged the importance of proactive vigilance, strict adherence to KYC norms, verification of consignor and consignee details of parcels, and timely reporting of suspicious consignments to law enforcement agencies,"”
