CJI Surya Kant: Justice Must Travel to the Citizen

The most important judge in India, Chief Justice Surya Kant, gave a speech in the city of Indore.

He said that justice should go to people who cannot reach the courts.

He wants courts and legal helpers to listen to people in their own language instead of using difficult legal words.

He said different people need different kinds of help, like tribal families, fishermen, migrant workers and women.

He said every person should be treated with dignity from the moment they ask for legal help.

He remembered a queen from Indore's history, Devi Ahilya Bai, who met farmers, widows and traders directly.

He also talked about technology, like filing cases online and virtual hearings, but said technology is only a 'bridge, not a destination.'

He said the list of old pending cases is much shorter than it was 10 or 20 years ago.

The conference lasts for two days and brings judges and legal helpers together to talk about making justice fair for everyone.
