Bihar to join crop insurance scheme from next rabi season

Crop insurance is like a safety net for farmers.

If bad weather, floods, or other natural events destroy their crops, the insurance pays them money so they do not lose everything.

The government of India runs a special crop insurance plan called the PMFBY.

Many states are part of this plan, and now Bihar will join it too, starting next rabi season in 2026-27.

West Bengal has already joined for the current kharif season.

Farmers pay a small amount of money, called a premium, to be part of the plan.

They pay 1.5% for rabi crops, 2% for kharif crops, and 5% for cash crops.

The Centre and the state government share the rest of the cost.

Since 2022, insurance companies have paid farmers more than Rs 86,731 crore as compensation.

This helps protect farmers in places like Bihar and West Bengal from floods, too much rain, and long dry spells.
