India’s First Victim Rights Centre Opens In Patna Today
Patna is getting India’s first Victim Rights Centre.
It is meant to help people who have suffered because of crime.
People can receive legal advice and other support in one place instead of visiting many offices.
Each person’s case will get a number and one main record.
Lawyers, counsellors and case workers will help with different needs.
The Centre can assist with medical care, compensation applications, protection and court visits.
It will also help some families affected by long undertrial detention or years of detention followed by acquittal.
The Centre will work with government agencies to connect victims with available services.
It will first operate in Patna for 12 months before officials decide whether to expand it.
Chief Justice of India Justice Surya Kant will inaugurate the Centre in Patna on September 26.
The Bihar State Legal Services Authority pilot will provide legal, medical, financial, psychological and rehabilitation support under one roof.
Each case will receive a Victim Case Number and a single record, with a panel lawyer assigned within 48 hours.
The Centre will coordinate with police, hospitals and government departments but will not directly provide compensation.
The 12-month Patna pilot may later expand to other districts after its performance is assessed.
