Renigunta Junction Marks 164 Years of Railway Transformation
Renigunta railway station opened in 1862 as a very small station with a tin roof and 10 workers.
Over many years, more railway lines and buildings were added.
A steam locomotive shed opened there in 1892.
The station’s old metre-gauge tracks were later replaced as the railway network developed broad-gauge lines.
Railway workers also replaced manual track points with interlocking and better signalling systems.
An automatic signalling system was introduced on the Renigunta-Arakkonam section.
Today, the station has five platforms and facilities such as lifts, waiting halls and reservation offices.
It also handles goods traffic and railway operations.
Because it is close to Tirupati and Tirumala, many pilgrims use it to travel to the region.
Renigunta Railway Station was established on August 27, 1862, and marks its 164th anniversary on Thursday, August 27.
The station began as a tin-roofed shed with 10 employees before expanding into a major railway junction near Tirupati.
Railway development included the Renigunta-Reddipalli section in 1864, an extension toward Cuddapah in 1865, and a steam locomotive shed in 1892.
Metre-gauge tracks, manual point-setting and older signalling systems were replaced by broad-gauge infrastructure, interlocking and automatic signalling.
Today, Renigunta Junction has five platforms, passenger and freight facilities, and routes serving destinations including Chennai, Mumbai, New Delhi and Kolkata.
