Andhra Pradesh Proposes Rs.1 Lakh Aid for Organ Donor Families

Andhra Pradesh wants to give more financial help to families who agree to donate organs from a brain-dead relative.

The proposed payment would rise from Rs.10,000 to Rs.1 lakh.

The proposal still needs consideration by the chief minister.

Many people in the state are waiting for kidney, liver, heart and pancreas transplants.

Some of those waiting are babies and children.

One donor may be able to help as many as eight people.

The government is also expanding hospitals that can perform transplants.

A new law would allow some family members to donate, permit organ swaps between families and appoint transplant coordinators.

It would also punish illegal organ removal and organ trafficking with prison and large fines.
