Awareness rallies in Tirupati, Chittoor promote organ donation
Some people get very sick when important body parts, like the kidneys or liver, stop working.
Doctors can give them new organs from people who have died, which is called organ donation.
Many more people need organs than there are organs available.
On National Organ Donation Day, hospitals in two towns in India, Tirupati and Chittoor, held rallies to teach people about organ donation.
They want people to sign up to donate their organs after they die.
One organ donor can help save up to eight other people's lives.
In the state, about 4,800 people are waiting for a kidney transplant, but only about 350 transplants happen every year.
That means a lot of people have to wait a very long time.
The hospitals asked everyone to talk to their families and friends about organ donation.
People who want to help can register on the NOTTO website.
Awareness rallies and programmes were held in Tirupati and Chittoor as part of National Organ Donation Day.
Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS) organised a rally in Tirupati, flagged off by Director Dr RV Kumar.
A single organ donor could potentially save up to eight lives, said Amara Hospital chairman Dr Gourineni Prasad.
District Collector Sumit Kumar said about 4,800 people in the state await kidney transplants, while only about 350 are performed each year.
People willing to donate organs can register through the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO) portal.
