Haryana Notifies ₹7.5 Lakh Compensation for Police Custody Deaths
Haryana has created a rule to help families when someone dies in police custody because of torture, cruel treatment or police negligence.
The family may receive ₹7.5 lakh.
At least half of this money must come from the salary of the police officer found responsible.
The rule does not cover deaths caused by natural illness.
It also does not cover deaths during attempts to escape or because of natural disasters.
The Haryana Home Department announced the rule in an official Gazette notification.
The Haryana Human Rights Commission helped bring about the policy while considering a complaint.
The complaint was filed by Parvesh Sharma, who said police detained and tortured him after he had received bail.
