Mizoram Advances Major Solar and Hydropower Expansion Plans
Mizoram wants to make more electricity from sunlight and flowing water.
It already produced solar power and small-hydropower electricity during 2024-25.
Several solar plants are working, and another plant is being built.
Many homes have also applied for rooftop solar panels through a government scheme.
The state is planning solar panels on suitable government buildings.
It is developing a 24-megawatt hydropower project called Tuirini.
It is also working on a much larger 132-megawatt project called Tuivai.
Officials are preparing funding, clearances and other approvals for these projects.
The electricity department may also be reorganised into three business units.
Mizoram generated 41.86 million units of solar power and 31.04 million units from Small Hydel Projects in 2024-25.
Commissioned solar projects include 20 MWp at Vankal, 2 MWp at Tlungvel and 10 MWp at Thenzawl; a 5 MWp project at Sumsuih is under construction.
Under the PM Surya Ghar scheme, 1,532 rooftop-solar applications had been received and 1,417 household installations were completed by August 14.
The state is pursuing the 24-MW Tuirini Small Hydel project and the 132-MW Tuivai Hydroelectric project.
Mizoram is also preparing to reorganise its Power and Electricity Department into three Strategic Business Units.
