K Laxman urges Centre to increase EPS 95 pension benefits
Some workers in India put a little money from their salary into a special plan called the Employees Pension Scheme.
When they stop working, they get a small monthly payment called a pension.
Right now, the smallest amount a retired worker can receive is Rs 1,000 every month.
A leader named K Laxman, who works in India's Parliament, says that amount is too small.
Food, medicines, and visits to the doctor have become much more expensive.
He asked the government to give retired workers more money every month.
He also wants pensions to grow when prices go up, so the money stays useful.
He asked for healthcare services for retired workers and their spouses too.
He thanked the Prime Minister for other programs that help workers.
This way, senior citizens can live safely and with dignity after working for many years.
BJP MP K Laxman raised the issue in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday, urging the Centre to increase pension benefits under the Employees Pension Scheme 1995 (EPS 95) and strengthen social security.
Laxman noted that EPS has served as a key pillar of post-retirement financial security for organised sector workers over the last three decades, covering retired employees, widows, and dependents.
He pointed out that the current minimum statutory pension stands at Rs 1,000, while the cost of food, medicines, and medical services has increased significantly.
He requested the Union Minister of Labour and Employment to consider increasing the minimum pension, linking it to inflation through an appropriate mechanism, and providing accessible healthcare to pensioners and their spouses.
Laxman appreciated Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership in implementing labour reforms and welfare initiatives including e-Shram and PM Shram Yogi Maandhan.
