Delhi LG Proposes TB Screening For All Hospital Admissions
Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor has suggested that people entering hospitals should also be checked for tuberculosis, even if they came for another illness.
The check would happen only with permission from the patient or family.
The plan is meant to help Delhi find TB cases earlier.
Delhi is currently behind its targets for preventing TB and providing special care.
Officials have been told to improve these numbers by September 30.
More testing will happen in high-risk areas and places where many people gather.
Officials will also use media messages to reduce fear and shame about TB.
A shortage of radiographers has slowed the use of portable X-ray machines.
The Lieutenant Governor also asked officials to pay eligible beneficiaries whose Direct Benefit Transfer payments are pending.
Delhi Lieutenant Governor Sardar Taranjit Singh Sandhu proposed TB screening for hospital patients at admission, regardless of their illness.
Screening would require the consent of the patient or family under the proposal.
Delhi’s TB Preventive Treatment coverage is 55%, below the 80% target, while Differentiated TB Care is 74%, below the 90% target.
Officials were directed to intensify screening in high-risk wards and congregate settings and expand media outreach to reduce TB stigma.
Sandhu also ordered action on radiographer shortages, deployment of AI-enabled handheld X-ray machines, and pending Direct Benefit Transfer payments.
