India to Spend ₹45,000 Crore on Border Railway Upgrades
India is planning to spend a lot of money—about 4.7 billion dollars—on new and stronger trains and tracks along its borders with China, Pakistan and Bangladesh.
The work will happen in the next year and a half and will add new tracks and platforms in states like Punjab, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, West Bengal, Assam and the far‑north east.
The plan is part of a bigger effort to make it easier for people to travel and for the army to move supplies quickly if needed.
It also helps India keep up with other countries that are building new roads and railways near the borders.
The project is a big part of the government’s plan to make the country safer and more connected.
India will invest up to ₹45,000 crore ($4.7 billion) in railway upgrades along its borders with China, Pakistan and Bangladesh over the next 18–24 months.
The plan includes new tracks, platforms and strengthening of existing lines in Punjab, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, West Bengal, Assam and several northeastern states.
The investment will account for about 22% of India’s total planned railway infrastructure spending for the next two years.
The upgrades are dual‑use, improving civilian connectivity while enabling faster troop movement and supply logistics for the armed forces.
The project follows earlier border‑infrastructure initiatives such as road construction along the Pakistan border, Doklam upgrades and the world’s tallest railway bridge in Kashmir.
