India’s August Goods Exports Surge 26%, Narrowing Trade Deficit
India sold many more goods to other countries in August.
Its goods exports rose by about 26% to $43.81 billion.
India also bought more goods, but imports grew more slowly than exports.
Because of this, the trade gap became smaller than in July and August last year.
Electronics, petroleum products and engineering goods were among the strongest export areas.
Gold imports dropped sharply, which helped limit spending on imports.
Services exports, such as other kinds of international business, also increased.
Officials said the growth came from higher shipment volumes across many products and markets.
India’s merchandise exports rose 26.12% year-on-year to $43.81 billion in August.
Imports increased 14.1% to $70.67 billion, narrowing the trade deficit to $26.86 billion.
Electronic goods, petroleum products and engineering goods recorded strong export growth.
Gold imports fell 58% to $2.3 billion, helping contain the overall import bill.
Services exports rose 24.6% to $38.87 billion, while services imports grew 37.4% to $21.42 billion.
