RTI Finds Millions of Jan Dhan Accounts Inoperative or Empty
The government created Jan Dhan accounts to help people access banking services.
An RTI response counted more than 59 crore such accounts.
Together, these accounts held more than Rs 3.15 lakh crore as of August 12, 2026.
About 5.72 crore accounts had no money in them.
About 15.37 crore accounts were marked inoperative.
Uttar Pradesh had the largest numbers in several categories.
The government said many other details are not kept in one central database.
The scheme is meant to support financial inclusion, banking access, financial education and social security.
An RTI reply reported 59,03,74,907 PMJDY accounts holding a combined Rs 3,15,179.90 crore as of August 12, 2026.
Of these accounts, 5,72,35,490 had zero balances and 15,36,77,009 were classified as inoperative.
Women, including transgender account holders, held 32.89 crore accounts, while men held 26.14 crore.
Uttar Pradesh recorded the most zero-balance and inoperative accounts, as well as the highest overall number of PMJDY accounts.
The Finance Ministry said it does not centrally maintain several details, including gender-wise balances and accounts blocked for suspected fraud.
