Lok Sabha Extends JPC Term for One Nation, One Election
The Lok Sabha, which is the lower house of India’s Parliament, decided to give more time to a group of lawmakers called the Joint Parliamentary Committee.
This committee is looking at a plan called “One Nation, One Election” that would hold national and state elections at the same time.
The committee’s deadline to finish its report was moved to the end of the winter session of Parliament.
The plan is part of a new law that could change how elections are scheduled in India.
Some opposition parties worry that the government might pass the new law too quickly after the committee’s report is finished.
Lok Sabha extended the deadline for the Joint Parliamentary Committee to submit its report on the One Nation, One Election proposal until the end of the winter session.
The extension was approved by voice vote amid uproar, with JPC chairman P. P. Chaudhary presenting the proposal.
The JPC, comprising 41 members from various parties, is reviewing the 129th Constitutional Amendment Bill 2024 to align national and state elections by 2029.
Opposition parties fear the government may pass the bill without adequate discussion after the report is submitted.
The committee has consulted state chief ministers, governors, legal experts, and opposition leaders during its deliberations.
