Engineering Talent Glut Deepens as Entry-Level Jobs Lag
A new report says India has many more engineering job seekers than available jobs.
Fresh graduates and people with up to three years of experience make up nearly half of the candidates.
However, they represent only about a quarter of the available jobs.
Overall, there are about six engineering candidates for each job.
The imbalance is especially large in electronics and instrumentation.
Engineers with four to ten years of experience are in the greatest demand.
Technology is the biggest single area hiring engineers, but many jobs are also outside technology.
Bengaluru has the most engineering opportunities among Indian cities.
The report says engineers may need to consider more industries and career paths.
Engineers with 0–3 years of experience make up 45% of candidates but only 28% of job opportunities.
The August 2026 estimate counted 39.59 lakh engineering candidates and 6.68 lakh engineering-background jobs.
There were 5.9 engineering candidates for every job overall, ranging from 1.1 in automotive to 11.5 in electronics and instrumentation.
Professionals with 4–10 years of experience accounted for 54% of engineering demand, while the 15+ years cohort had a lower candidate-to-job ratio.
Technology remained the largest destination, but 67% of engineering jobs were in other industries, including manufacturing, construction, automotive, electronics and energy.
