UPI is a system that helps people in India send and receive money digitally.

It began on 25 August 2016.

Over ten years, it became a major part of India’s payment system.

In FY26, people used it for 241.62 billion transactions.

That was 30% more than the year before.

The average payment became smaller, falling to about ₹1,300.

This suggests people are using UPI more often for everyday purchases.

In June 2026, UPI made up most retail payment transactions by number.

Its total value was also about 70% of the cash circulating in India by July.
