Nepal Flash Flood Death Toll Reaches 903, Thousands Remain Missing
Flash floods badly damaged northern and central Nepal on August 26.
Officials said 903 people had died by Monday.
They also said 4,247 people were still missing.
Rescuers had saved more than 10,000 people, including locals and tourists from several countries.
The floods destroyed homes, vehicles, roads, bridges and hydropower projects.
Experts believe falling ice and rocks, or an avalanche, may have caused the floods near the Nepal-Tibet border.
Bodies were found in all eight affected districts.
Reports said people also died or went missing in Tibet.
India found 17 bodies in rivers that may have come from Nepal, but those bodies were not included in Nepal’s death toll.
Nepal’s flash-flood death toll reached 903 on Monday, the sixth day of rescue operations.
Authorities reported 4,247 people missing, including security personnel, foreigners and hydropower workers.
Bodies were recovered from all eight affected districts, with the highest totals in Chitwan and Nawalparasi East.
More than 10,000 people were rescued as rain, swollen rivers and damaged infrastructure hampered operations.
Separate reports said 16 people died and 546 were missing in Tibet, while India recovered 17 suspected flood victims’ bodies.
