Uttar Pradesh Leads India’s Residential Solar Growth Under PM Scheme
India is installing solar panels on people’s homes through a government programme called PM Surya Ghar.
Uttar Pradesh installed more home solar power than any other state in August.
Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh were the next-largest contributors.
Across India, installations slowed compared with the record month of July.
Even so, the programme had reached 5.46 million households by August.
Some government data from August 12 reported 5.16 million households and 14.8 gigawatts of rooftop capacity.
The programme also says that nearly 1.9 million households had zero electricity bills.
The government wants solar panels installed for 10 million households by the end of financial year 2026-27.
Uttar Pradesh added 228.95 MW of residential rooftop solar in August, the highest among Indian states.
Maharashtra added 212.51 MW and Andhra Pradesh 192.39 MW during the month.
Nationwide residential rooftop additions fell 11.6% month-on-month to 1,407.32 MW in August, from 1,592 MW in July.
PM Surya Ghar had reached 16,185.48 MW of installed rooftop capacity across 5.46 million households by August.
The scheme aims to cover 10 million households by FY27, with an interim target of 7.5 million households by December 2026.
