Maharashtra Government Sanctions ₹136.76 Crore For Karanja Harbour Development
The Maharashtra government has approved money to improve Karanja Fishing Harbour in Uran.
The project will cost ₹136.76 crore.
Workers are expected to begin in November.
They will remove mud and silt from the harbour and make its entrance wider.
A new 370-metre wall will also be built.
Silt has made it difficult for boats to move during low tide.
Fishermen sometimes wait four to six hours to unload their fish.
The project will also add buildings, auction centres, cold storage and other facilities.
Officials say the improvements will help thousands of fishermen in Raigad district.
The Maharashtra government has sanctioned ₹136.76 crore for 21 development works at Karanja Fishing Harbour in Uran.
The project includes dredging and widening the entrance channel and building an additional 370-metre wharf wall.
Work is expected to begin in November, following severe silt accumulation over the past two years.
Silt has forced fishermen to wait four to six hours during low tide to unload catches and leave the harbour.
The remaining funds will support auction centres, cold storage, an ice factory, sewage systems, roads, buildings and other facilities.
