Maharashtra Rubber Trials Needed For Healthcare Raw Material Supply

Maharashtra is studying whether farmers can grow rubber in the state.

So far, only one reported trial has taken place in Kolhapur.

Experts say more tests are needed, especially in the rainy Konkan region.

These tests would examine whether the soil, weather and drainage are suitable for rubber trees.

They would also study which rubber plant varieties grow best and how much rubber they produce.

Officials say farmers should not begin large plantations until these trials show that growing rubber is practical and profitable.

India currently uses more natural rubber than it produces.

Rubber and latex are important for making healthcare items such as gloves, condoms and tubes.

Successful cultivation could give Maharashtra another commercial crop and increase India’s domestic supply.
