India Backs ASEAN Energy Plan, Explores Regional Power Link
India welcomed a new ASEAN plan for working together on energy from 2026 to 2030.
India says it will cooperate on clean energy, electricity connections and energy security.
India and Singapore are looking at a possible link to send electricity between them.
One idea is a long route through Myanmar, Thailand and Malaysia.
India also offered to share what it has learned about renewable energy, batteries and power grids.
India reported that 55 per cent of its installed electricity capacity came from non-fossil sources by September 30.
It also reported millions of rooftop solar installations under the PM Surya Ghar scheme.
India said it reached a non-fossil capacity milestone in June 2025, five years before its 2030 target.
India welcomed the ASEAN Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation 2026–2030 and pledged cooperation under its own 2026–2030 plan with ASEAN.
India and Singapore are exploring a proposed 2,000 MW cross-border power link; one option is a roughly 3,000 km land corridor through Myanmar, Thailand and Malaysia.
At the East Asia Summit energy ministers’ meeting in Manila, Shripad Yesso Naik offered to share India’s expertise in renewables, grid integration, storage and green hydrogen.
India said its installed generation capacity reached 558.8 GW by September 30, including 308 GW from non-fossil sources, or 55 per cent of the total.
As of September 29, 2026, the PM Surya Ghar scheme had recorded about 5.01 million rooftop solar installations benefiting 5.95 million households; India said it reached 50 per cent non-fossil capacity in June 2025.
