Dharavi Redevelopment: 890 Tenements Vacated, 379 Structures Demolished

In Mumbai, India, there is a neighborhood called Dharavi where many people live in small homes called hutments.

The government is rebuilding this area through the Dharavi Redevelopment Project, and part of the land belongs to the Indian Railways.

So far, workers have demolished 379 structures, and 890 tenements have been vacated.

Around 3,500 hutments still stand in Sector 6 of Meghwadi-Ganesh Nagar.

Before more homes are torn down, their electricity meters must be disconnected.

Some residents did not want to leave and protested against the eviction.

Nearly 80 of the people who opposed the project have now met with officials to present their claims.

A new 36-storey rehabilitation building is being built, and railway employees will get the first apartments in it.

The project is being done in phases so that eligible families are given new homes while the old ones are cleared.
