Above-Normal Heat Pushes Kerala Power Demand, Restrictions Possible
Kerala is hotter than usual because the monsoon has been weak and rain has been limited.
This has caused people to use more electricity.
Much of the extra electricity is likely being used during the hottest parts of the day.
Power demand in Kerala has recently been 500 to 800 megawatts higher than in previous Septembers.
Electricity demand has also increased across India.
Because of this, less electricity is available through the power exchange.
The Kerala State Electricity Board warned that some power cuts may be needed.
These restrictions could happen between 6 p.m.
and midnight if there is not enough power.
Kottayam recorded 35°C, the state’s highest temperature departure at 4.4°C above normal.
Punalur, Vellanikkara and Palakkad also reported temperatures more than 3.7°C above normal.
Higher temperatures and weak monsoon conditions have increased electricity consumption across Kerala.
KSEB said power availability has fallen because national demand is high and central supply has declined.
Partial restrictions may be needed from 6 p.m. to midnight if electricity imports remain inadequate and grid frequency falls.
