MMRC Approval Required for Metro 3 Construction Within 50-Metre Zone

The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation has created a safety zone around Metro 3.

Anyone building or rebuilding within 50 metres of the metro route must first obtain permission from MMRC.

This applies to homes, housing societies and other property projects.

It also covers digging, demolishing buildings, drilling wells and laying infrastructure.

Some Metro 3 tunnels run beneath properties at depths of about 17 to 25 metres.

MMRC says unsafe work could damage the tunnels or other metro structures.

It also wants builders to protect pedestrians and commuters from falling equipment or collapsing scaffolding.

Projects that already have an MMRC clearance must follow the new safety conditions too.

The authority warned that failing to comply could have legal consequences.
