Sona College Students Win National Hackathon
Three students from Sona College in Salem won a big prize at a national competition.
They made a special sports T-shirt called 'RheoShield' that protects athletes from getting hurt by fast-moving balls.
The T-shirt has a special layer that stays soft normally but hardens when a ball hits it.
Another team from the same college also won a special award for making fire-resistant fabric using natural materials.
The competition was organized by the government to encourage new ideas in textiles.
The college is known for its good work in fashion technology and has even developed patents in this field.
Three BTech Fashion Technology students from Sona College of Technology, Salem, won the first prize at the Sanrachna Product Development and Design Innovation Hackathon organized by the Ministry of Textiles.
The winning team developed 'RheoShield', a sports T-shirt that protects athletes from high-speed ball impacts using shear-thickening fluid (STF).
The T-shirt's inner layer hardens on impact to absorb and disperse the force, minimizing injury risk to vital organs.
Another all-women team from Sona College received the Special Innovation Recognition Award for their project on Flame Resistant Finishing on Cotton Fabric Using Natural Resources.
The hackathon was supported by the National Technical Textiles Mission (NTTM) to promote innovation in technical textiles and functional apparel.
