Amarnath Yatra Suspended From August 9 Amid Rain, Track Damage
The Amarnath Yatra is a very special trip that many people in India make every year to visit a holy ice cave high in the mountains of Kashmir.
This year, the trip started on July 3 and was supposed to last 57 days, until August 28.
But a lot of rain has made the mountain paths slippery and broken, and weather experts predict more bad rain is coming.
So the leaders in charge decided to stop the Yatra starting August 9, on both of the routes that pilgrims use.
They want to keep everyone safe and give workers time to fix the trails.
Officials also said fewer and fewer people were coming because the roads from Jammu were hard to use.
More than 480,000 people have already visited the holy cave this year.
The special religious mace, called Chaddi Mubarak, will still be carried to the cave on August 28 to officially end the Yatra.
Pilgrims are being asked to follow safety rules while the repair work is going on.
The 57-day Amarnath Yatra will be suspended from both the Pahalgam and Baltal routes starting August 9, 2026.
Authorities cited persistent rainfall, damaged tracks on vulnerable stretches, and an adverse India Meteorological Department weather forecast as reasons for the suspension.
Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Anshul Garg also noted a sharp decline in pilgrim footfall, with arrivals dropping significantly since July 23.
More than 4.8 lakh pilgrims have performed darshan at the holy cave shrine this year, while the Border Roads Organisation carries out repair work.
The Chaddi Mubarak will still proceed via the traditional Pahalgam route, marking the Yatra's culmination on August 28.
