Amarnath Yatra Suspended from Jammu Amid Inclement Weather Forecast
The Amarnath Yatra is a long journey that many people make to visit a holy cave shrine high up in the mountains.
This Saturday, the journey was paused because the weather was turning bad.
Weather experts said very heavy rain might come, and too much rain can cause floods and landslides.
So officials did not let any new groups of travelers leave the base camp in Jammu.
They want to keep everyone safe on the road.
Many people had already made the trip, with more than 475,000 visitors since it started on July 3.
The Yatra lasts 57 days and is supposed to end on August 28.
Officials will watch the weather and check the highway before letting new groups of pilgrims go.
The Amarnath Yatra was suspended from Jammu on Saturday amid inclement weather and forecasts of heavy rain.
No fresh batch of pilgrims was allowed to leave the Bhagwati Nagar base camp for the Kashmir Valley.
More than 4.75 lakh pilgrims have visited the 3,880-metre-high Amarnath cave shrine since the Yatra began on July 3.
The Meteorological Department forecast heavy to very heavy rain, with the possibility of flash floods and landslides in the Jammu region till August 11.
Officials will review pilgrim movement based on weather and highway conditions, and traffic on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway was plying smoothly despite light to moderate rain.
