Kasganj Wetlands Gain Legal Protection Through Uttar Pradesh Gazette
Three wetlands in Kasganj, Uttar Pradesh, now have legal protection.
The wetlands are called Bastauli Brahmpur, Ram Chhitouni and Sikandarpur Khurd.
People cannot build on them, dump waste or encroach on the protected areas.
The wetlands collect rainwater and are also replenished by groundwater.
They provide homes for birds and aquatic animals.
They help recharge groundwater and store rainwater.
Local people use them for fish farming and agriculture.
One of the wetlands also has religious and cultural importance.
The government sought public comments before adding them to the state gazette.
Three Kasganj wetlands—Bastauli Brahmpur, Ram Chhitouni and Sikandarpur Khurd—have been entered in the Uttar Pradesh state gazette.
The notification prohibits construction, waste dumping and encroachment in the protected wetland areas.
The wetlands cover about 5.8, 4.6 and 9.6 hectares, respectively.
They support biodiversity, migratory birds, aquatic life, groundwater recharge, rainwater storage and local livelihoods.
The Kasganj administration invited public objections and suggestions from May 21 until July 21 before the notification.
