NGT Report Finds No Environmental Appeal Wins in 2026
A report looked at decisions made by India’s National Green Tribunal during the first six months of 2026.
The tribunal hears cases about protecting the environment.
It examined 119 appeals.
In 52 cases, it did not study the main issues because of technical reasons such as late filing or lack of jurisdiction.
Of the 67 cases considered on their main issues, 16 came from environmental or public-interest groups.
None of those 16 appeals won a favourable decision.
By comparison, 30 of 51 appeals from industries or project developers succeeded.
The report said this difference appeared across all five tribunal benches.
The National Green Tribunal dismissed all 16 environment- and public-interest appeals decided on their merits from January through June 2026.
Industry and project-proponent appeals had a 58.8% success rate, with 30 of 51 appeals succeeding.
Of 119 total appeals, 52 were disposed of without the tribunal examining their merits.
The South Asian Reporter on Environment Law said the environmental appeals faced a total shut-out across all five NGT benches.
The report classified one Central Zone ruling as a non-win because the challenged groundwater guidelines had already been withdrawn.
