Parliamentary Panel Urges NGT to Act More Proactively on Environment
A parliamentary committee reviewed how India’s National Green Tribunal is working.
It asked the tribunal to act on important environmental problems even when nobody formally brings a case.
These problems include air pollution, illegal sand mining, polluted rivers and cutting trees for highways.
The committee also mentioned unsafe high-rise construction and ecological risks in northeastern states.
It wants authorities to follow the tribunal’s orders more quickly.
It recommended regular reports to show what actions have been taken.
The NGT was created in 2010 to handle environmental cases.
The committee said the tribunal helps people receive environmental justice faster.
