Tata Sons chairman Chandra declines third term amid trust feud
Tata Sons is one of India's biggest companies, and its top leader is called the chairman.
A man named N Chandrasekaran has been the chairman for some time.
In October 2024, Ratan Tata, the group's beloved family leader, passed away.
After his death, people in charge of the Tata family trusts started disagreeing with each other.
Some trustees were kept on, while others were pushed out.
This created a big split inside the Tata group.
Because of the split, the plan to give Chandrasekaran another term got stuck.
Some people were worried about big money losses at Air India and Tata Digital.
So in August 2026, Chandrasekaran said he would leave the job early in 2027.
Now the company must find a new chairman.
On Aug 12, 2026, N Chandrasekaran announced he will not seek reappointment as Tata Sons chairman, staying in the role until Feb 20, 2027.
The decision came six months after his third-term extension stalled on Feb 24, 2026, when Noel Tata withheld support amid concerns over losses at Air India, Tata Digital and other bets.
The rift began after Ratan Tata's death on Oct 9, 2024; Noel Tata was unanimously appointed chairman of the Tata Trusts, which own nearly two-thirds of Tata Sons.
Mehli Mistry was denied reappointment to the Sir Ratan Tata Trust and Sir Dorabji Tata Trust in October 2025, and Vijay Singh quit the Tata Sons board after four trustees opposed his nomination.
The Maharashtra Charity Commissioner froze Sir Ratan Tata Trust in May 2026, leaving roughly ₹400 crore in grants stuck ahead of the Tata Sons AGM and dividend.
