India Ranks Fifth in GenAI Patents · rediff.com

India is now one of the five biggest countries for generative AI patents.

A patent is a formal record showing that someone has developed a new invention.

India published 929 generative AI patents in 2024 and 2025.

That was almost as many as it published during the previous ten years combined.

China was far ahead of every other country in the report.

The United States and Japan also increased their patent activity quickly.

Japan’s growth was helped significantly by SoftBank.

Patents for large language models, which can work with text, code, images, and other media, became more common than patents for systems that make media look more realistic or detect fakes.
