Eight Delhi Sewage Plants Fail Prescribed Discharge Standards in July
Delhi checked more than 30 sewage treatment plants in July.
These plants are supposed to clean wastewater before it is released.
Eight plants did not meet the required cleanliness standards.
The Yamuna Vihar Phase III plant had too many suspended particles and organic pollutants.
It also had much more faecal bacteria than allowed.
Other plants in areas including Mehrauli, Ghitorni and Vasant Kunj also had high bacteria levels.
The Delhi Pollution Control Committee regularly tests these facilities.
The checks are meant to help reduce pollution in the Yamuna and other water bodies.
The latest Delhi Pollution Control Committee report found eight sewage treatment plants failed discharge standards in July.
Yamuna Vihar Phase III recorded TSS of 32 mg/l and BOD of 20.4 mg/l, above the 10 mg/l limit for both.
Its faecal coliform count reached 7,600 MPN/100 ml, compared with the prescribed limit of 230 MPN/100 ml.
Plants at Mehrauli, Ghitorni, Vasant Kunj, Keshopur and Kapashera also exceeded prescribed limits.
Mehrauli and Ghitorni recorded faecal coliform levels of up to 17,000 and 18,000 MPN/100 ml, respectively.
